Fizzy Memories

Filed under: — Kate @ 7:12 am EST

I was inspired to take this picture the other day after I filled my glass just beyond its brim with ginger ale. I wanted to see if I could capture the surface tension that was keeping it in the glass.

Anyway, that got me to thinking… as far back as I can remember, I’ve always associated ginger ale with my grandmother. As a child, I don’t think I ever went to my grandparents’ house without having ginger ale at some point during the visit.

Grandma would always pour it over ice, and give it to me in the special Foghorn Leghorn glass. I suppose sometimes my brother got that glass, but I don’t remember fighting over it with him, so who knows. (At home, we used to fight endlessly over who got to drink out of the “fruit cup,” which was a cup just like all the others, except that it was the only one with a fruit pattern instead of flowers.)

These days, Grandma still keeps herself stocked with ginger ale (or rather, my mom does), and I can still go over to her apartment and drink it from the Foghorn Leghorn glass if I want to—and sometimes I still do.

SEPTA: In a Nutshell

Filed under: — Kate @ 7:17 am EST

I got a new cell phone over the weekend, so to prepare my old phone for retirement, we downloaded the old pictures and things I wanted to keep. And I came across the picture below, which I took on April 1st of this year at Suburban Station.

I realize it’s a rather crappy photo, but I just need to point out the thing you see hanging from the light there. It’s a loud speaker, strung up and wired in the most ghetto fashion you can possibly imagine. Now I realize they are working on this station (it’s only been what, 87 years?), but I found myself thinking “If anything could sum up SEPTA in a nutshell, this is it.”

Running Scared in the Valley Below…

Filed under: — Kate @ 6:19 am EST

I’m beginning to think I’ll never finish the recap of my July 2005 trip out west. It’s pathetic, I know. I swore I would finish it before we took another trip. But I guess what: I didn’t.

And I wouldn’t want that to mean I had two unfinished projects, so I decided to go ahead and write up our Death Valley Excursion. After all, I had a mere 700 pictures to sort instead of the 3700 we took in July.

I actually had this ready to go last week, but I was having a formatting problem that my OCD would not allow to see the light of day.

Hope you like them. (Click below.)

Monday Leg Blogging (on Wednesday): Better Late Than Never

Filed under: — Kate @ 6:20 am EST

Filed under: — Kate @ 3:57 pm EST

Well people, that’s it for this week. I’m pretty sure they don’t have the internets in the back country of Death Valley, so you won’t be hearing from me for a few days. I know it’s hard. But you’ll get through it.

Anyway, check back next week. I’ll try post a few pictures from the trip, and if you’re lucky, maybe I’ll even have a special leg blog.

Atlanta The Vicinity of Atlanta

Filed under: — Kate @ 6:48 am EST

I guess my trip to Atlanta went pretty well. As expected, the airport and the inside of the hotel were the only things I saw besides this lovely view from my window. But the flights went smoothly, the meeting was moderately interesting, and I met some cool people. Plus, I get to check off one more state on my map. :-)

I did come to realize a few things, though.

1) At every meeting, there will always be one person who asks one stupid question after another, much to the chagrin of the speaker and everyone else in the room. The questions will be either completely irrelevant, or about something that was already covered. Sometimes the questions will not even be coherent.

2) There should be mandatory training before anyone is allowed to give a PowerPoint presentation. The training should expressly forbid the use of things such as an image Superman standing in front of a giant American flag, or the words “Thank you” in a rainbow of colors, flashing, spinning, and flying in from ten different directions.

3) No matter how perfect I try to be, I’ll at least find some minor way to be an idiot.

If I Had a Hammer

Filed under: — Kate @ 6:07 am EST

I’ve had this post sitting around as a draft for like two months now. Partly because I was saving it for a slow day, and mostly because I started it and then never got around to finishing.

It’s about a little ordeal I had a couple of years ago, so it’s not really time sensitive or anything.

As some of you may remember, my pal Holz actually blogged about it back then. After I had emailed him about my experience, he asked my permission to publish it on his Stomach Pains, and I agreed.

The source of the email was left anonymous, presumably to protect the stupid (i.e. me). Well, now that some time has passed, I wanted to give the story a rewrite and claim it as my own.

So it’s really, really weird that just when I was getting ready to publish it, Holz pulled his old post from the depths of his archives to be included in his “Past Lives” section.

It must be our 7/11 twin telepathy working in mysterious ways.

UPDATE: This post has been blogicized. [Philadelphia Will Do]

Anyway, here’s my story…

Monday Leg Blogging: Kate’s an Idiot

Filed under: — Kate @ 11:26 am EST

I brought the camera to work with me today, since I didn’t have a chance to take a “leg” picture before I left.

Did I bring anything that would read the memory card for me?

No, of course not.

So here’s a picture from Central Park last February instead.
