Kodachrome Basin State Park, UT

Filed under: — Kate @ 1:20 am EST

Makes you think all the world’s a sunny day…

Kodachrome Basin State Park is located within the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The park contains a wide array of shapes and colors which change according to the light. This beauty inspired National Geographic photographers to name the Park “Kodachrome Basin” in 1949 (with Kodak’s permission, of course).

We spent only a couple of hours at Kodachrome, but it was enough time to take a quick paced hike to Shakespeare Arch, and then check out the Eagle View trail. The Eagle view trail turned out to be damaged, and signs advised against climbing it, but that didn’t stop Edo from scaling the crumbling and eroded steps (and scaring me half to death in the process). Myself, I climbed about half way up, and then descended the trail step by step on my butt!

I wish I’d taken a picture of the trail, but you can see what it was supposed to look like here. When we got to it, the railroad ties were bare and exposed, with the outside ends protruding from the side of the hill. The steps all had holes in them, and the outside edge of the trail was almost completely washed away.

Anyway, we left as the sun was setting, and headed to Bryce Canyon where we set up camp in the dark. This was the first of two nights that we camped.
