Silly Little Survey V: Vacation, All I Ever Wanted

Filed under: — Kate @ 8:44 pm EST

Well, with the summer winding to a close, I thought I’d ask some questions about travel, since people tend to do a bit of it in the warmer months.

The usual rules apply: answer truthfully or lie your ass off, whichever you prefer.

1) What’s the last vacation you took (where did you go, what did you do)?

2) Name three places where you would like to travel some day.

3) How many US states have you been to? Driving through counts, flying over does not. Here’s a map to help you count.

4) Does your job ever require you to travel?

5) Beach or mountains?

6) How many foreign countries have you been to? Feel free to list them (or just your favorites).

7) Do you have a current passport? Did you know that only 20% of Americans have one?

8) Any trips planned for the near future? If so, care to tell us where?

9) Culture or leisure (i.e. museums, historical sites, landmarks or laying on the beach, gambling, shopping)?

10) Is the journey really more important that the destination?

1. Edo Says:

1) Italy, to hang out with parents. Took a side trip to the South of France, Dordogne region.

2) Great Barrier in Australia, Galapagos Islands, New Zealand (LOTR’s fault).

3) 36.

4) Only locally.

5) Beach, though I’ll take mountains for skiing.

6) 48, according to 2005 fragmentation.

7) Yeah, two of them, Italian & US. I like my martini shaken, not stirred.

8) I’d travel all the time, if I had the money.

9) Both, but separately if possible.

10) HELL NO. Only if the journey is in itself a destination (driving though Sahara, etc.)

2. Manchild Says:

1) What’s the last vacation you took (where did you go, what did you do)?

In July, I went back to Switzerland. While there, I did the worlds largest bungee jump. It was my first ever jump, and it was absolutely fantastic, even though there was a problem with the rope.

2) Name three places where you would like to travel some day.
New Iberia, Louisiana, USA.
Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Anywhere in New Zealand.

3) How many US states have you been to? Driving through counts, flying over does not. Here’s a map to help you count.
1. New York.

4) Does your job ever require you to travel?
Yes.

5) Beach or mountains?
Mountains.

6) How many foreign countries have you been to? Feel free to list them (or just your favorites).
Ah crap I have no idea. A lot. Some of them dont’ even exist anymore.

7) Do you have a current passport? Did you know that only 20% of Americans have one?
Yes, but it runs out in December. I heard 1in5 had one, but I honestly thought it was lower.

8) Any trips planned for the near future? If so, care to tell us where?
Yes. I’m off to London on Saturday. One of my best friends is off to Brazil for a month. (She flies out today) And my best friend is off to Copenhagan (she flies out tomorrow). We’re all a bunch of travelling freaks, I guess.

9) Culture or leisure (i.e. museums, historical sites, landmarks or laying on the beach, gambling, shopping)?
Culture wins most of the time. I hate lying on the beach waiting for cancer to come get me.

10) Is the journey really more important that the destination?
Like so many things, it depends on who you’re travelling with, and who you’re going to see. I’m travelling with some great people at the moment, so the journey is more important. But I am no longer as certain as I used to be that there is no one waiting in the clearing at the end of the path.

3. Kamin Says:

6) Canada only… oh and central PA. That’s a scary place.

7) No passport for me.

8) Nope. Maybe a hike in the Adirondacks.

9) Culture

10) Journey sucks. Their best songs rank high on the cheese-factor.

4. Stan Says:

1) 5 days in a campgroud outside Sea Isle City NJ. Just hung out with the newborn.

10. the journey is just as good sometimes, but not always.

7. Lushy Says:

1) What’s the last vacation you took (where did you go, what did you do)?
Does my own wedding count? If not, then Pecone’s wedding in Hilton Head.

2) Name three places where you would like to travel some day.
Bora Bora, Australia, Italy

3) How many US states have you been to? Driving through counts, flying over does not.
25 or 26

4) Does your job ever require you to travel?
No, but it helps make traveling cheaper!

5) Beach or mountains?
Depends if it is summer or winter!

6) How many foreign countries have you been to? Feel free to list them (or just your favorites).
Sadly, just Mexico and Canada. And I have only been to Mexico because one night I got bored and drove to Tijuana just so I could say I’ve been to Mexico.

7) Do you have a current passport? Did you know that only 20% of Americans have one?
No

8) Any trips planned for the near future? If so, care to tell us where?
Hawaii, wine country, some golf trips, Florida

9) Culture or leisure (i.e. museums, historical sites, landmarks or laying on the beach, gambling, shopping)?
Both, but usually leisure

10) Is the journey really more important that the de
stination?
It depends on where you are going and what there is to see and do. The people you travel with make all of the difference too.

8. Holz Says:

1) What’s the last vacation you took (where did you go, what did you do)?
I suppose my trip to Vegas for Tomothy and Mel’s wedding. Got addicted to three card poker, and tried to dance with every girl at the reception.

2) Name three places where you would like to travel some day.
Australia, Argentina, Rome… Rome is really the only place in Europe that interests me.

3) How many US states have you been to? Driving through counts, flying over does not. Here’s a map to help you count.
Lived in (5): Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, California
Spent a significant time in (9): Ohio, New York, Massachusetts, Georgia, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, Virginia, West Virginia
Drove through (10): Indiana, Illlinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, North Carolina, South Carolina… plus I stood on Four Points, so Colorado and Arizona, too.
Been there for a layover (1): Texas

4) Does your job ever require you to travel?
Not often, although I did have to go to Atlanta once for a few days for field office exposure/training…

5) Beach or mountains?
Beach… even though I don’t like the ocean. Mountains just involves too much work.

6) How many foreign countries have you been to? Feel free to list them (or just your favorites).
Canada… that’s pretty much it. Does The Bahamas count?

7) Do you have a current passport? Did you know that only 20% of Americans have one?

Since I’m part of the 80%, not too surprised.

8) Any trips planned for the near future? If so, care to tell us where?
Nope… heading back to PA for my dad’s 50th and my bud’s wedding, but that’s pretty much it.

9) Culture or leisure (i.e. museums, historical sites, landmarks or laying on the beach, gambling, shopping)?
Do I even need ot answer this?

10) Is the journey really more important that the destination?
I’d have to say yeah. My drive cross country by myself was amazing, and somehting I recommend everyone to do once.

9. Holz Says:

My message is awaiting moderation? Wonder what keyword set that off…

10. Kamin Says:

Maybe “DIE KAMIN DIE” ?

And no, that’s not German for “The fireplace the”. It’s quite a bit more hostile than that!!!

11. Kate Says:

My message is awaiting moderation? Wonder what keyword set that off…

Haha, I’ll have a look.

Ahhh… it was “poker.” 90% of my spam comes from online poker places.

Oh, and “Texas,” as in Hold ‘em. Might have to rethink that one.

12. Melissa Says:

1) What’s the last vacation you took (where did you go, what did you do)?
I am arguing that our wedding doesn’t count, that sh*t was a lot of work to pull together. So my last vaca was Hawaii in 2002 for my 25th birthday. I drank, shopped and slept for the most part.

2) Name three places where you would like to travel some day.
Egypt, Italy, Greece

3) How many US states have you been to? Driving through counts, flying over does not. Here’s a map to help you count.
No idea, doesn’t really matter.

4) Does your job ever require you to travel?
Never ever

5) Beach or mountains?
Beach, I like being by water, although I guess a mountain lake would work too.

6) How many foreign countries have you been to? Feel free to list them (or just your favorites).
Six/seven but most of those are caribbean islands.

7) Do you have a current passport? Did you know that only 20% of Americans have one?
Since I’m part of the 80%, not too surprised.

8) Any trips planned for the near future? If so, care to tell us where?
Three weddings next year that we’re hoping to turn into semi-vacations (Portland OR, Santa Cruz CA & somewhere in FL).

9) Culture or leisure (i.e. museums, historical sites, landmarks or laying on the beach, gambling, shopping)?
I need a vacation of leisure but if I went to my three most wanted destinations, it would be all about the culture.

10) Is the journey really more important that the destination?
Not necessarily more important, but still loads of fun. The journey there that is. The journey back? Sucks.

13. Kate Says:

Damn, you guys rock! I don’t think I’ve ever gotten so many responses this quickly. Thanks!!

So anyway, here’s my two cents:

1) What’s the last vacation you took (where did you go, what did you do)?
Anyone who reads this blog knows the answer to that. Tom & Melissa’s wedding. American West. Road trip. National Parks. General awesomeness. Best. Trip. Ever. (And more pictures coming soon, I promise!)

2) Name three places where you would like to travel some day.
London. Venice. Prague. Honestly, I don’t know why I limited this to three, seeing as how I wrote this damn survey and I’ve never been ANYWHERE.

3) How many US states have you been to? Driving through counts, flying over does not. Here’s a map to help you count.
18: PA (obviously) New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, Texas, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico. WV and KY were just drive throughs, and I spent under 2 hours in NM, going to and from Four Corners.

4) Does your job ever require you to travel?
Very occasionally. I went to Dallas last December, and I may go to Atlanta in January.

5) Beach or mountains?
Mountains, no contest.

6) How many foreign countries have you been to? Feel free to list them (or just your favorites).
One stinking freaking goddamn country. And it was—you guessed it—Canada. Not that I have anything against Canada, but why does Europe have to be so bloody far away? I read Edo’s answer to this question, and I just looked up at him and said “I hate you.”

7) Do you have a current passport? Did you know that only 20% of Americans have one?
Yes, fat lot of good it’s done me. Obviously I knew the stat since I posted it, but in reference to MC’s comment about it being even less than 20%: that stat includes a large portion of recently naturalized citizens. It’s much less if you only count native born Americans.

8) Any trips planned for the near future? If so, care to tell us where?
Nothing really, other than NYC for U2 next month.

9) Culture or leisure (i.e. museums, historical sites, landmarks or laying on the beach, gambling, shopping)?
Definitely culture. Although I do love shopping…

10) Is the journey really more important that the destination?
I prefer a trip where everything is a destination, though that’s not always possible. And as some of you already mentioned, the right traveling companion can make a world of difference. That said, I’d like to do a major trip by myself some time. Just once. Preferably to an English speaking country so I don’t get myself into too much trouble.

14. Stan Says:

I drank, shopped and slept for the most part.

Sounds like Kate’s college career. ;)

15. Kate Says:

Except for the part about sleeping.

16. Edo Says:

He meant “sleeping around”, dear. :-D

17. Kate Says:

Oh. Well okay then.

18. Stan Says:

Booyah Grandma! *high-fives Edo*
