In Other News, the Dead Walk the Earth!

Filed under: — Kate @ 12:50 pm EST

We watched Corpse Bride last night. If you are a Tim Burton fan, this movie is a must-see. It was beautifully macabre, and the animation was incredible.

Unfortunately, I thought the story was a little scarce. That was a bit disappointing. But, at only 85 minutes long, it’s worth it to watch for the visuals alone.

Oh, and the best character is definitely the maggot impersonating Peter Lorre.

Have You Tried Turning It Off and On Again?

Filed under: — Kate @ 6:14 am EST

Yesterday, one of my students said to me as she was leaving for the day “Oh, by the way, the computer died on me earlier. I tried turning it back on, but it died again.”

Ummmm… WHAT?!

Now this is a very smart girl. One of the brightest students I’ve had. Not at all like my Dumb and Dumber interns from last summer (“Does that go through the network or something?”).

So why she wouldn’t come running into my office the minute it failed is beyond me.

I asked her “Did you check the power connection?”

“No.”

No?! NO?!! When your computer spontaneously shuts down, isn’t that the FIRST THING YOU CHECK??? I dunno, maybe I’m asking too much here. Maybe I’ve just kicked more power cords and accidentally ripped them out of the wall than the average person. Wait, no… that’s definitely true…

Anyway, I’m actually not sure what happened. All the plugs were, in fact, still connected, but the computer wouldn’t turn on. So I just switched off the surge protector, pressed reset, and turned it back on. Voila, the computer booted up. I must be a fucking genius.

But I digress. I didn’t even start this post with the intention of telling that story, but then I found myself inspired by the title.

So now, the original reason for this edition of my blatherings…

The new Britcom “The IT Crowd” is my favorite new tv show at the moment. It’s about the IT geeks in the basement of a large company.

Do yourself a favor and watch the first episode here.

A Thumb Drools

I thought the anagram transit maps I’ve been seeing on Boing Boing this month were pretty cool. People have been taking various cities’ mass transit maps and rearranging the names. It all started with London, I think.

I kept hoping someone would make a Philly version. Well, the wait is over:

Sending Out An SOS

Filed under: — Kate @ 3:06 pm EST

I was watching some tv show last night where a woman was being abducted. She was trapped in a car trunk, and calling for help from her cell phone. I guess her abductor heard this, so he stopped the car and got rid of her phone.

That got me to thinking… shouldn’t there be some way to send a 911 text message? Or even email? There are lots of instances where it would be easier to summon help while remaining hidden and safe if you didn’t have to talk. Just a thought.

Wanna See My Gun?

Filed under: — Kate @ 6:40 am EST

As Edo was walking back to our apartment building on Saturday morning, he noticed a homeless man sitting by our door, clutching a brown paper bag. Deep in thought, Edo was trying to decide if he should go back up to our apartment, or wait outside for a friend he was expecting.

Well, he must have had a puzzled look on his face, because it prompted the homeless man to speak up…

“Are you all right man?”

“Yeah, just waiting for a friend.”

“Oh, I thought you wanted my gun.”

“No, not really.”

“Wanna see my gun?”

“No thanks.”

“Wanna shoot somebody?”

“No thanks, not today.”

Homeless man stands up, looks at abandoned pink and purple ladies bike with completely flat tires and screwed up gears.

“Do you know whose bike this is?”

“No, not really. It has been abandoned in my building for like two years.”

“So, if I take it no one’s gonna say I stole it?”

“Nah, I don’t think so. Go right ahead… it might not work too well, though.”

“It’s a bike… I’m homeless… I need a bike!”

Homeless man walks away with non-functional bike.

I know I’m a little late in posting this, but I loved it so much that I don’t care. Remember the SEPTA driver who threw a woman off his bus? Well, I saw these last week on Philebrity and almost blew Mike’s Hard Lemonade out of my nose. Would’ve posted them immediately if I wasn’t in Vegas.

You are looking at what is quite possibly my first computer experience ever. Yes, that is a Commodore 64 (and my cousin). Whether or not this was the actual first time, it’s definitely the first computer I ever touched.

UPDATE: Hi Phillyist readers! (Btw, I’m the girl.)

I’m Baaaa-aaaack

Filed under: — Kate @ 5:55 pm EST

Well, here I am in Philly again. I didn’t fall off a cliff or get sucked into a vicious cycle of booze and gambling, but I am kind of paying for the time off now. Both Edo and I have completely screwed up our sleep schedules and are swamped with work.

Maybe I’ll get around to posting a few pictures tonight. But anyway, until I have time to return to blogging full-force, check out these recaps of “Dude Weekend” by Holz and Lushy.

Oh, in the picture on Lushy’s site of everyone at dinner, I look like a giant blob with no arms. Rest assured, I still have my arms. Both of them. And I’m really not quite so blobbish, either.

Toodles!

Filed under: — Kate @ 3:57 pm EST

Well people, that’s it for this week. I’m pretty sure they don’t have the internets in the back country of Death Valley, so you won’t be hearing from me for a few days. I know it’s hard. But you’ll get through it.

Anyway, check back next week. I’ll try post a few pictures from the trip, and if you’re lucky, maybe I’ll even have a special leg blog.

A little brain storming activity for ya:

Name some of your all-time favorite songs (and the band/artist, preferably).

No specific number, although 10 to 20 is a good target. And they don’t have to be in any particular order, either.

I’ll look forward to reading your answers when I return to civilization.

Death Valley: T-7 Hours and Counting

Man, the last day of work before I’m off for a few days is always so stressful that I find myself almost wishing I wasn’t taking time off. Almost. I NEVER have enough time to prepare work for other people. Sometimes that just means I leave late, but when there’s a flight to catch at 6:00 PM, that’s not really an option. Grrrrr….

This Week in SEPTA

Filed under: — Kate @ 4:16 pm EST

February 8th: The Bus Driver

“The driver and the passenger began arguing about him not stopping at her stop,” Russell said. “He grabbed her by the hair and knocked her head into a pole.”

The driver then opened the door and allegedly threw the victim into traffic… [Inky]

I understand how he must have felt. On more than one occasion, I’ve felt the urge to do that same thing myself. To SEPTA drivers.

Edney was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and terroristic threats.

The driver did not follow proper protocol. [CBS 3]

The driver did not follow proper protocol??? Ummm… ya think, CBS 3?? Ya think??

February 9th: The Bomb Sniffer

The technology has never before been put to civilian use in the United States. SEPTA’s purchase has made the transit system a proving ground for the wares of a struggling California firm, one that is millions of dollars in the red and trying to emerge from the twin clouds of expensive lawsuits and a federal securities investigation. [Inky, via Philebrity]

Leave it to SEPTA to contract with a company that can’t get its act together. Seriously.

Last week Edo’s friend… let’s call him Stu… got a sweet new 42″ flat screen TV. We went over to check it out, and help with the setup. Okay, Edo went over to help. I just tagged along and was completely useless.

Anyway, the TV is truly awesome. The boys had a lot of fun playing with it. For much of the night, their eyes were glazed over with some sort of big screen hypnosis.

As usual, Edo was sure to bring along a DVD for testing and demonstration purposes. This time it was Return of the King. We didn’t really end up watching the movie, so much as the scenes from the movie that had the most action and the biggest boom.

Still, I saw enough of hobbits gazing longingly into each others’ eyes to crack myself up. And that bed romping scene? It’s all just too easy. SNL should really do a segment called “The Ambiguously Gay Hobbits.”

Stu, of course, thought I was laughing at his other new purchase: a real sized steering wheel and pedals for driving the circuits of Gran Turismo. Well alright, I suppose I was laughing a little at that. I mean, I just don’t get car racing games. But mostly I was laughing at the hobbits.

At the end of the movie, when Frodo is saying goodbye to Sam, I just couldn’t resist shouting “I can’t quit you, Mr. Frodo!”
