Silly Little Survey

Filed under: — Kate @ 6:25 pm EST

Well, I don’t have a cat to Friday cat blog, so I thought I’d make up a silly little survey instead.

1) What album(s) have been on your rotation in the past week?

2) What’s the last concert you’ve been to? (I don’t care if it was in an arena, a coffee house, or a concert hall.)

3) What image is on your mouse pad?

4) Do you have any pets?

5) Kirk or Picard?

6) What did you want to be when you grew up?

7) What’s the last movie you saw in a theater? Did you like it?

8) How many pairs of shoes do you own? How many do you think I have?

9) Coke or Pepsi?

10) Do you ever hear strange voices? If so, what do they say?

Well, that’s enough silliness for today. I just thought it would be fun to ask some random questions. Answer truthfully or lie your ass off, whichever you prefer. Hey lurkers, why not throw in your two cents? I know you’re out there; I can see the statistics. You can always post anonymously. I’ll answer my own questions on Sunday. Right now I’ve gotta leave work before happy hour is over. Have a good weekend!

UPDATE: Thanks guys. Thought I’d wait a little longer before answering in case anyone else wants to comment.

UPDATE #2: At least one person was having troubles with posting here yesterday (Monday), so if anyone else had that issue, I’m sorry! It should be working now.

UPDATE #3: I finally answered my own questions. Sorry for the delay. I wanted to wait a little longer, and then I ended up having a hellish few days of work.

Speaking of Catholics and Weddings…

…doesn’t this seem a little extreme?

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia plans to forbid brides from being walked down the aisle by their fathers, since it is not “part of the sacred liturgy” and therefore “not considered appropriate.” [Inky]

Yesterday I made my 100th post! Considering how much I babble, I’m surprised I didn’t break into triple digits sooner.

As of Today, West River Drive is No More

Filed under: — Kate @ 11:14 am EST

Am I the only one who has a problem with renaming West River Drive after Martin Luther King, Jr? Okay, so we are one of the only major cities without a street named after him. So what? We have a high school and recreation center named after him. (more…)

How to be a Catholic

Filed under: — Kate @ 9:42 pm EST

Stan has inspired me to deride my religious upbringing. Here’s how I would describe a Catholic mass to those who have not had the pain of experiencing one for themselves:

Enter church. Dip fingers in water that has already been dipped into by hundreds of people. Apply to body.

Kneel, cross yourself, and quickly get up before sitting on hard wooden bench.

Sit quietly until mass begins. Reflect upon all your sins. You are a bad person. Don’t deny it—you were born that way. (more…)

Hello again…

Filed under: — Kate @ 11:00 am EST

Well I’ve been absent for a while… sorry about that. I’ve been pretty tied up, both at work and at home. Let’s see… Edo’s birthday was Friday, so I helped him celebrate by taking the day off and doing seven loads of laundry. We also went out to lunch, hit the grocery store, took a nap (damn Indian food puts you right to sleep), and I got a chip in my tooth fixed. FUN!! Anyway, the real fun came later when I baked a cake and gave Edo his presents, which included (among others things) the Star Wars Trilogy. And that was that.

We watched the first movie the same night, and then Edo’s good friend Tom came over to watch Empire and Jedi with us on Saturday. Here’s my first impression of the dvds. WOW!! Freaking amazing sound and the transfers looked beautiful. I’m pretty miffed about all of the changes (which is why we didn’t buy it sooner), but the dvds really are quite awesome. That early scene in Empire with the shot of all the ships when you first hear the Imperial March—we have these sweet little bass transducers under the futon and it was just… OH MY GOD! It was so freaking incredible. I would bitch about the changes (especially replacing the Anakin force ghost with Hayden Christensen, that was just bullshit), but I’m assuming most of you are already familiar with the inability of George Lucas to LEAVE THINGS ALONE!!! Bolton’s ‘Stache

Every time I see a picture of John Bolton, I crack up. How anyone can take that mustache seriously is beyond me. I keep thinking that Conan should have Bolton’s mustache do battle with Tom Selleck’s mustache.

…Rush Limbaugh really is nuts:

On 4/12/0205:

LIMBAUGH:

When does he start up this stupid little network? August? Yip yip yip yahoo. You know what Gore said about this? It’s going to be liberal. It’s going to reflect the point of view of young people.

What the hell is that, Al? What the hell is the point of view of young people? Blow jobs, that’s what they’re doing out there. They’re out there getting oral sex all day long, that’s what they’re talking about. That’s the point of view they can’t wait that your boss,

Al made sure that’s become the number one sport in high school today. So, I guess you’re going to have a BJ network out there, Al, is that what you’re going to do? You’re going to call your network the oral sex channel out there, start competing with MTV?

No, it’s not going to have any of this stuff out there, folks, it’s going to be talking about liberalism, no, no, no, that’s not what we’re about. Classic cannot even admit who he is. [via Atrios]

I mean, does any of that even make sense?? And by the way, shouldn’t they have bleeped out the “blow” in blowjob?

Sing Along to the Age of Paranoia

Filed under: — Kate @ 12:49 pm EST

So I don’t watch a whole lot of regular television, but in the last week I’ve noticed (what seems to me) some excessive censorship on basic cable. On last night’s Daily Show, they bleeped out the “blow” in blowjob. And last week I was watching the Green Day episode of Storytellers on VH1 (excellent, btw). Now I was expecting them to censor the big ones, but dope? I thought we were past that. They wouldn’t censor it on a cop show (”busted for dope”) so what’s the big deal if it’s in a song? I know the FCC has everyone running scared, but this is cable, not broadcast. WTF?!

I actually tried searching the web for a list of these words and came up empty. So, I want to compile a list of seemingly silly words that are bleeped on basic cable. Here’s my start:

-blowjob (Daily Show, Comedy Central)
-faggot, fags (Green Day Storytellers, VH1)
-dope (Green Day Storytellers, VH1)
-mary jane (Green Day Storytellers, VH1)

(There’s probably more from Storytellers, but that’s what I can remember off the top of my head. They probably killed “cocaine,” too.)

Please add other instances you’ve noticed to the list, and (include the show/network if you can remember). Also, if anyone can point me to a good site for this, that would be great.

Criminal Indecency: Hard Time for Rough Language

Filed under: — Kate @ 11:34 am EST

Just a quick thing from the pile of mush that is my overworked, underslept brain:

I read an article this morning that got me thinking:
Sensenbrenner to cable execs: Indecency is criminal act

Basically:
Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner III, R-Wis., told cable industry executives attending the National Cable & Telecommunications Assn. conference here on Monday that criminal prosecution would be a more efficient way to enforce the indecency regulations.

Okay, this guy is a nut. That’s easy to see. But this is what I can’t wrap my head around (possibly due to the mush effect):
Obscene speech is not protected by the First Amendment and can’t be broadcast at any time, but indecent speech can be aired safely between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. because the courts and the FCC have determined that children are not a large part of the audience in those hours.

So here’s my question: What is obscene speech, and what is simply indecent? The FCC does not have clearly defined rules, and even if they did, who decides? People may have differing, or even opposite opinions on what constitutes decency. Personally, I think watching someone eat cow eyeballs or cockroaches is more offensive than a pair of breasts (well, natural breasts, anyway). But that’s just me.

Sorry I’ve been kinda absent lately. You might have noticed that I’m attempting to have an open thread for random comments and discussion. Still working on the best way to do it, but for now this is what we have. Please feel free to comment/discuss/write whatever you want. Mike, this would be the place to leave new music recommendations….
