A Smattering of Intelligence

Filed under: — Kate @ 12:05 pm EST

Wow. Just when I think I’ve mellowed out, I find people who make me feel an uncontrollable rage….

Religious Nuts: Intelligence has no place in this discussion! [Wonkette via Independent Report]

Best quote from the article: “We’ve been attacked by the intelligent, educated segment of the culture.”

Incidentally, has anyone ever seen Inherit the Wind? It’s about a teacher who was arrested for the crime of teaching evolution in 1925 (true story based on a true story). There are some eerie similarities to this case. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Oh the Joys of Shopping in Philly

Filed under: — Kate @ 10:01 am EST

So I spent last Saturday looking for a birthday present for my dad. I failed miserably. Why do you men have to be so hard to shop for? Any suggestions from you male people out there? Anyway, I also indulged myself in a bit clothes and shoe shopping. Now when you live in Philadelphia without a car, your shopping options are a bit limited. There are a few decent places where I can’t afford to shop. A few others that are sort of hit or miss. And then you have The Gallery. Worst. Mall. Ever. (more…)

PULL THE PLUG

Filed under: — Kate @ 9:52 am EST

Well, I’m not exactly the first person to bring this up (Holz, Stan, Philebrity), so I’ll be brief:

If I end up like Terry Schiavo, PULL THE PLUG.

And donate my organs while you’re at it. As many as they will take. I certainly won’t be needing them.

That is all.

Excuses, Excuses…

Filed under: — Kate @ 10:29 am EST

Been a little absent these past few days. Here are my excuses:
-I’ve been REALLY busy at work.
-Um, Thursday was St. Pat’s Day.
-Friday: see Thursday. And I had to work.
-Saturday I was shopping. I needed more shoes. Really.
-Saturday night I went out to dinner with my aunt. To the Smoked Joint. Not really my first choice.
-Sunday we had people over.
-The Sims 2 is a damn addictive game.

Anyway, I’ll probably go Blog-lite this week. Work really is kicking my ass.

He Could Wake the Dead

Filed under: — Kate @ 10:46 am EST

I thought of including this bit in my Love/Hate: My Apartment post, but it’s not something that happens every night, and it had been a while since I last heard it. My upstairs neighbor sometimes snores so loudly that he (or she) keeps me awake. Seriously, I’m not making this up. It took a while to figure out what the noise was, but it’s definitely someone snoring. And it started again last night. I don’t understand how a person can make that much noise and not wake himself up! Perhaps he’s one of those blood-drinking reptillian aliens…. Because the sound is inhuman. *YAWN* I need a nap.

Grandma's Cake

I made two birthday cakes last weekend, one for Mom and one for my Grandmom. I was pretty pleased with the outcome. Of course we only took this one picture of my Grandmom’s cake after it was in the box. We took her to the Dalí exhibit for her birthday, so I attempted a Dalí inspired cake (that’s supposed to be a melting clock).

I made a celtic themed one for my mom. My brother took some shots with his digital camera, so if I get a hold of his pics I’ll post one of her cake, too. After all, I was up all night baking/decorating, so I’d like to show off my efforts.

By the way, you should have seen the makeshift boxes Edo constructed so we could safely carry the cakes on the train!! I brought home some heavy cardboard and packing tape from work and he made boxes to fit. It was hilarious. Most ghetto cake transportation effort ever! But it worked.

Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate, One Second Before Waking

I went to see the Salvador Dalí exhibit at the PMA last weekend. It was great. The exhibit was well organized, which I appreciate because I hate museums where you wander around aimlessly and easily miss things. The paintings were presented chronologically, and the really important ones had long written explanations (which you really need with Dalí). Also, you get one of those little audio tour thingies with the price of your ticket, so you can listen to extra info about certain items. I was a little disappointed about the lesser known paintings, which were presented with very little information other than the title and the year it was done. That seemed a bit lacking. (more…)

No More Bringing the Bar Smell Home With Me

That is, as long as City Council passes this bill: Philadelphia Smoking Ban.

I really, really, REALLY hope it passes.

Of course, this will probably just encourage me to drink more…

I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope they pass this bill!

Coming Soon: An American Remake of [insert any British show here]

Filed under: — Kate @ 1:24 am EST

So I’m watching my secret lover man on the Tonight Show, and I see an ad for The Office, soon to premiere on NBC. WTF?!! Did they learn nothing from that miserable remake of Coupling? Ugh! It looks like it’s going to be horrible. Any day now I think we’re going to see them redoing AbFab. Kirstie Allie can play Edina, and maybe Joan Rivers could be Patsy.

Besides readers of WIL WHEATON dot NET, that is.

Anyway, check out this article in the New York Times.

And then watch CSI tonight!

For once, I’m actually going to watch a television show as it’s being broadcast. Sometimes I just can’t wait.

Bond. James Bond.

Who should play the next 007?

The frontrunners are rumored to be Clive Owen and Julian McMahon, but speculation on Pierce Brosnan’s successor has included Ewan McGregor, Orlando Bloom, Hugh Jackman, Ioan Gruffudd and Colin Farrell.

Personally, I still think Pierce Brosnan had one more Bond film left in him, but I would vote for Hugh Jackman or Clive Owen. What do you think?

Love/Hate: My Apartment

Filed under: — Kate @ 8:55 am EST

I hate my apartment because…
it’s in West Philly/University City. Translation: ghetto/college students everywhere.
there’s a perpetual leak in my bathroom. They fix it, it starts again, they fix it, it starts again. It creates a hole in my ceiling, they fix it after like 5 months, it leaks again and ruins the shitty repair job they did. A vicious cycle. (more…)

Radio Blog #3: The Arcade Fire - Funeral

Filed under: — Kate @ 1:25 am EST

Arcade Fire - Funeral We’re just a million little gods causing rainstorms, turning every good thing to rust.

Funny, I was planning to update this all week with the Arcade Fire album Funeral, and here comes Rolling Stone with a nice little write-up about The Arcade Fire.

I really love this whole album. It’s best to listen from beginning to end, but if I had to recommend one song, I guess it would be “Wake Up.”

So do yourself a favor and listen–they are SO good!!

Heroin Went to see Kenn Kweder (and The Men From Wawa) at the Tin Angel last Friday night. Lots of fun. The Tin Angel is a great place to see live music–I highly reccommend it. And Kenn Kweder is always worth checking out. He’s a Philadelphia institution. You can listen to some of his music at KennKweder.com. I recommend “Heroin.”

Y100 Revisited

Y100--RIP This article almost perfectly sums up my feelings on Y100’s demise. Except for the “get over it” part. I’m not quite over it just yet….

On another note, I was happy to hear the WMMR DJs sending warm fuzzies to the Y100 staff who were tossed out on their arses. Once in a while we actually do have a little brotherly love going on here in Philly.

UPDATE: Okay, now this is just silly…

UPDATE 2: It looks like Philebrity is having issues. Here’s a Google cached version of the main page, but without the full text of the article (scroll down).

The Bush Plan For Fighting AIDS

Filed under: — Kate @ 1:00 am EST

Some health groups charge that the administration and Republicans are imposing their social agenda on a medical crisis. [WSJ.com]

Ya think?

The Bush administration is making private American AIDS organizations that provide foreign health services pledge their opposition to prostitution or be denied federal grant money. All organizations will be forced to take this “pledge,” even if their programs have nothing to do with prostitution.

Republican lawmakers also want to cut funding to private organizations that encourage clean-needle exchange programs overseas.

Yeah, because telling people not to have sex or do drugs has always worked before. Geniuses.
